Call Termination is a complex area and in order to help understand how these options work
together some definitions are useful;
Route: this is defined as a possible dialled number and will have an associated pre-
fix attached to it. These pre-fixes are determined by the PBXs physical location. So,
for example, from Ireland the pre-fix 001 denotes calls to the US and Canada.
Billing Group: is defined as a collection of routes which have a shared tariff. Ie all
outbound calls to a particular Billing Group are charged at the same rate.
Tariff: is the cost structure applied by the telecoms provider to a particular billing
group
Trunk: a trunk is a route by which a call can leave the PBX and be terminated or
delivered to its destination. There are 3 possibilities here, SIP, IAX and Zap. The
latter, which is often more commonly described as a channel, refers to the routing
of the call over the traditional PSTN.
Dial Plan: is a top-level grouping of the above objects. This allows for multiple
configurations on the one system to be assignable to the different users.
